Description
This is a Dorothy and Paul Gutierrez black pottery signed baby buffalo. It measures about 1 ½’ high x 2 1/4” long.
The couple were perhaps the most famous potters from Santa Clara. Please see the information below.
The Gutierrez couple; Paul ‘White Corn’ was born 1936 into the Santa Clara-Tewa Pueblo and Dorothy ‘Corn Maiden’ was born in 1940 in the Navajo Indian Nation. They were encouraged to work with clay since young-Paul since age 12 (grandson of Lela and Van Gutierrez and son of Luther Gutierrez (of Margaret and Luther Fame).
Paul and Dorothy were married in 1965 and are perhaps the best known black pottery making team of Santa Clara Black Pottery. Their work consists mostly of bowls, animal figurines and ‘Mud Heads’.
Paul and Dorothy have passed away so there is no more pottery from the wonderful Pottery team that had made pottery for over 50 years. All that is now available is from existing collections. The Gutierrez family biography can be found in many books including, “The Fourteen Families in Pueblo Pottery”, by Rick Dillingham.
